OCHS History
....Since 1980, OCHS has been providing premium medical and dental services to patients of all ages. OCHS serves the working poor, low-income families, the uninsured and many susceptible and high-risk populations such as: the homeless, the elderly, migrant and seasonal farm workers, poor women and children and people living in remote rural communities. The organizations operations are funded by federal grants, state funds, Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay patients (who pay on a sliding fee schedule) and by charitable contributions made by private citizens and foundations. ....As the Community Health Center (CHC) movement moves into its 5th decade never has there been more of a need to consider how important safety net health care is for people who find themselves without insurance or without access to care. ....OCHS built and moved into a facility at 744 SE 25th in 1994. The building served the surrounding area and grew past capacity in 2003. Adding providers, bilingual staff and exam room space allowed OCHS to expand its services and number of medical and dental encounters (office visits and procedures). Additionally, OCHS added rural sites in Ft. Cobb and Tipton, Oklahoma in 2002 and 2003 respectively. In addition to the Community Health Centers, OCHS also directs a Migrant Farmworker Health Program that has specific resources available for un-insured migrant and seasonal farm workers, some of the neediest in the Metro and surrounding areas. These patients lack resources, and have great obstacles to health and dental care. ....In 1994, OCHS was named a FQHC--formally Southeast Area Health Center. The corporate name changed in 2003 to Oklahoma Community Health Services, Inc. with the main clinic and corporate office in Oklahoma City. The Ft. Cobb and Tipton Clinics were opened as expansions in 2002/2003. These expansions were awarded under the President’s initiative to double the number of FQHC’s nationally by the year 2008. ....We recently were awarded another grant to open a fourth site in the Northwest area of Oklahoma City. This area was considered MUA (medically underserved) and HPSA (Health Professional Shortage Area). The newest site will be available to patients by the end of Summer 2009.
